Waste of taxpayer dollars in Virginia

It is my understanding that the Virginia Department of Health has “hired” a company to survey people in Virginia regarding health issues.

I have received my second call from a company to survey Virginia residents regarding their health. The first call, I told them that I had contacted the governor, explaining my reasons for disapproving of the survey, and that I do not respond. I wished her a good day and hung up. I just received a second call. I did not even respond, I simply hung up. Hereafter, I will not respond to any caller who is not identified in the caller ID as anything more than an “incoming call.”

Why are my tax dollars being spent to hire a company to ask anyone questions regarding their health. I have my own physicians, pay my own bills and am very upset that the tax dollars of Virginia are being spent so unnecessarily. This is a tough economic time.  Instead of paying this company, reduce the taxes — of which there are so many — and help counties reduce their taxes, so that counties like Prince William will not feel it is necessary to raise the property tax level by 28 percent.

I would guess that the Health Department is conducting this survey to learn what health issues are affecting the citizens it serves. Surveys cost money, but operating blindly would waste much more. For example, perhaps the department would start an expensive flu shot campaign when the vast majority of citizens are already getting them. Another possibility would be a widespread difficulty in obtaining pre-natal care, but without surveys the department would never know and never do anything about it. Anyone is perfectly within his or her rights to refuse to participate in a survey for any reason, but please understand that many surveys serve a useful purpose.
