Ensuring that someone picks up the phone
There is nothing scarier than the thought of losing one’s home.
That’s why when fire erupts, the first thing anyone thinks of is to call 911, expecting that the fire department will come running.

Efforts to stop drunk drivers not in vain
Drunk drivers kill innocent people, sometimes, entire families. DUI checkpoints conducted by the county police are not only a deterrent for some drinkers, but also serve to nab all manner of scofflaws.
Economic concern for the future
The state of our economy has many of us concerned about the future.
Reichley got it right on the Liberty wall
After reading the article “Liberty wall: A fitting symbol,“ I must say Charles Reichley did an outstanding job!
A reader’s experience vacationing on a cruise
On a Holland America cruise line traveling up a section of Alaska, I didn’t know what to expect beforehand. Overall, it was a majority geriatric (“retired”) cruise with only a minority of young people including infants and children.
Warning — Don’t flush wrench down the toilet
The intergalactic keg party is in jeopardy. That’s because someone clogged the space toilet.
The need for computers in the 21st
In the 21st century there is one thing that is almost guaranteed. You need a computer.

Who has experience and who doesn’t
There is an elephant in the room in this year’s presidential campaign. It is experience and John McCain has got it.
Editorial writer was biased in description
The reference to the Supreme Court of the United States as “The gang of nine” in the first paragraph of the editorial was highly disrespectful and completely out of line.
A good story to balance out the bad
In this day and age we seldom hear “feel good” stories.
Congress needs to get its priorities straight
So old “Blue Eyes” has now gotten honorable congressional recognition by having his own commemorative postage stamp, as well as having previously been awarded the Congressional Gold Medal.
A pleasant encounter and a vote assured
A few months ago, I had the pleasure of meeting Bob Marshall, Republican for U.S. Senate. Knowing that I wanted to get involved in politics and that I would be turning 18 before the elections, he told me about how I could become a delegate at the Virginia Republican Convention on May 31.
Support for Judy Feder in June 10 primaries
I’m voting for Judy Feder on June 10.
Crackdown consequences
These are some of the online reader reactions to a May 27 article about the effect of the illegal immigrant crackdown on Prince William County.

Disgusted with Gary Jacobsen’s column
As a military officer and Iraq veteran sworn to defend the Constitution, I was disgusted with Mr. Gary Jacobsen’s convoluted defense of the “constitutional right” to kill unborn children, in the May 27 column, “Questions and answers about abortion rights.”
Working hard spells ‘success’
Graham Park Middle School student Marie Mach is in Washington, D.C., this week representing Prince William County in the 2008 Scripps National Spelling Bee.
Happy birthday to CJ Angelos
May 28, 1985-November 18, 2006.
We will always remember your kind spirit buddy. Fly high with the angels my son.
Hide-and-seek politics
I’m not sure what they wound up playing, but I know what theme song they could have blared out in that hall in Phoenix earlier this week when John McCain surreptitiously squirreled George Bush inside for their covert fundraiser. When in doubt, look to John Lennon, so how about “You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away” by the Beatles?
Liberty wall: A fitting symbol
The “Liberty wall” in Manassas is a pro-immigrant billboard at 9500 Liberty Street in Manassas City, facing the Manassas train station. It is 12 feet tall and 40 feet wide.

Staying home on the holidays
The National Zoo is a nice place to take the wife and kids on the weekend because it’s free. Parking is a different story.
A time and a place for everything
The wall at 9500 Liberty Street has become a focal point in the debate over illegal immigration.

Don’t forget the filth of cigarette butts
I want to agree and add to Louis G. Dominguez’s Letter to the Editor “A missed point over hospital smoking policy.” Another point is about all the cigarette butts that smokers throw on the ground.
Board consideration of ‘Investigations’
I am encouraged by the Prince William School Board’s consideration of “another view” about Math Investigations, from a member of the National Mathematics Advisory Panel.
Global warming critic is not credible
Although Oscar Arrieta asks a fair question regarding global warming, his letter lacks credibility. By utterly ignoring science, Mr. Arrieta has assumed a political position rather than a scientific one. One can draw their own conclusions only by looking at all of the facts.
Neil misses the point on gun control
Anna Neil missed the point by such a distance as to not even be in the same galaxy with it: “Finding ways to protect people from guns,” May 24.
Friendly bank not so friendly
Our home owner’s association fees are rising not because of increased costs but because our friendly banks are not paying their monthly fees on repossessed homes. Our neighborhoods are suffering blight not because of inattentive home owners but because our friendly banks are not maintaining their repossessed homes.
Questions and answers about abortion rights
On May 20, a federal appeals court in Richmond overturned for the second time Virginia’s law on late-term abortions. The court ruled that the law created an “undue burden” on women by going beyond the guidelines set last year by the U.S. Supreme Court in the case of Gonzales v. Carhart.
High court draws right distinction
On a topic that long has inspired judicial ambiguity, the Supreme Court has provided rare commodities in modern jurisprudence: clarity and sensibility. The gang of nine upheld 7-2 a federal law used by authorities to rein in child pornography.
