Take the train to New York City

From time to time my wife and I like to spend a “long weekend” at one of the better hotels in New York City. While there, we make it a point to dine at popular restaurants and to take in at least one Broadway show. In the past we’ve traveled by air, but no more. From now on, we will be taking the train.

The incredibility of McCain’s claims

Thanks to Jason Korzen and Edwin Powell for pointing out that the quote A. Vic Poillucci attributed to Barack Obama in his July 11 letter was a fabrication.

A rebuke of Merli’s liberal talking points

There are not enough words to rebuke John Merli’s column on July 24. John did hit all the liberal talking points so he does keep the far left happy. He does the typical comparison of evil doings to President Bush.

A game made up of the elite and the peasants

It is sad that people have continued to not see the big picture. People have theories on life when it is not necessary and the truth is right before your eyes. Let me say it again, white and black, brown and yellow it does not really matter. All that matters is the elite and the peasants.

Rant should have never been printed

Robert Moeller’s letter of Tuesday, July 22 was ridiculously stupid, but I repeat myself.

Planned Parenthood volunteer speaks out

As a volunteer for Planned Parenthood, I wish to respond to the July 16 article about the protesters at a Planned Parenthood volunteer training.

Thanks to public safety workers

The residents of Marywood Apartments would like to thank the fire department, EMTs and police for the excellent care they gave us during July 13 fire. They were kind and concerned about everybody’s well-being.

Celebrate African-American heritage

One of the great things about Manassas is that though it continues to grow and resemble a more metropolitan area, it maintains the ties of a small, close-knit community.

Best friend recovered

Michele Soto took her family to the beach last week so she could explain to her sons that she had breast cancer. What was to be a hard trip took an even darker turn when the Sotos received a call on Saturday from the kennel where they had left their dog. Rex had escaped and was now missing.

Value to foreclosures in PWC?

One of the sweetest and most refreshing drinks in the world is a cold glass of lemonade. How ironic it is that it comes from the sourest fruit available — the lemon.

Flashbacks of another campaign

It’s an election between old and new.
The Republican presidential candidate is a former war hero and seasoned senator who would be the oldest president in history when he starts his first term. His opponent is a much younger, charismatic Democrat.

No federal funding for Planned Parenthood

In answer to your editorial, the free speech of Planned Parenthood is not “free” to the taxpayers, and it is time to cut federal funding, which last year amounted to $330 million.

Poor judgement on McCain’s part

John McCain said he was more concerned with the war in Iraq and that we could “muddle through in Afghanistan.” He showed poor judgment and forethought, which is disturbing given that he says this area is his strong suit.

A sarcastic inquiry into an investigation

As a matter of sarcastic curiosity, is master criminal investigator Powell conducting a criminal investigation of Sandi Teets as his latest letter (7-15) would suggest?

Parsing fact and rumor

Newspapers are meant to be bastions of fact in a world often swayed by rumor and innuendo.

Pay for how one performs

I have been listening to National Public Radio in the mornings when I wake up. One subject that has been getting a lot of attention lately, both on NPR and in Washington, DC, is school reform.

More than a thanks for parade committee

A simple thank you just isn’t enough for our fabulous 2008 Dale City Parade Committee.

The ladies of the church

A portraits of the ladies in church, who exemplify faith.

Don’t forget humanity of Barack Obama

Barack Obama, his wife, Michelle and their two children are human beings that have hearts that pump at 60 beats a minute.

The passing of a local icon in Woodbridge

On July 16, the passing of Woodbridge business entrepreneur Bob Roadcap was a melancholy moment from the ‘70s and ‘80s for many who recall spending Saturday mornings in Bob’s Sport Shop at Occoquan and Horner Roads chatting about Friday night’s high school games.

Reader stunned by attack on the Pope

I sit stunned after seeing the vicious cartoon attack on the Pope and, by extension, the Catholic Church, with the cute caption, “Pope Rejects Consumer Culture.” This came from a Spanish political-cartoon Web site, and was translated for our benefit.

Guns, police and firing ranges

Twice a year. That is how often Manassas City Police get to practice their firearm skills.
That makes us nervous.

Yards trouble spots now bloom on me

I itch.
As I write this, I am trying mightily to keep from removing my fingers from the keyboard and raking them across the ugly, raised red patch on my shin.

The true story of Roe v. Wade

Thank you for the front page coverage of Stephanie Hopping with the American Life League, protesting Planned Parenthood’s meeting at Chinn Park Regional library.

A nation of laws that must be respected

This is in response to the letter, “No desire for your sympathy or respect,” by Ruben Pineda.

Soon, you won’t have Bush to kick around

Oh my, just what are the whacky, freaked-out, liberal George Bush haters going to do when he is out of office. My goodness, Mr. Remener and Mr. Chandler (who both had their wild rantings published in this paper recently), I ask you just what is going to occupy your time after January 20?

Stars in their eyes
Stars in their eyes

Why do people think the media is biased in favor of Barack Obama?

A sarcastic take

These are some of the online reader reactions to the July 20 letter to the editor by Suzie Eskelund, “A sarcastic thanks for clearing our community.” Read the letter at http://www.insidenova.com.

Shameful decisions in Prince William County

I do hope many read the article, “Sights to see ... so close to home,” along with the elegant scene of the restored Brentsville courthouse featured in the July 13 edition of the Potomac News & Manassas Journal Messenger.

No safe haven for birds in Montclair

Riddle: When is a bird sanctuary not a bird sanctuary?
