Hockey and the sounds of silence

Where’s the beef? Last night was the NHL draft and nary a word in Potomac News. I went online and saw other teams discussed, but nary a word regarding the Caps.

Nobody’s buying

New fees on cars might go nowhere.

Prosecutions should use a bigger stick

Late last year, some Manassas teenagers thought it would be fun to throw objects on the highway with the goal of causing car accidents.

A life lived with love and passion

A little more than a week ago America lost a giant in journalism, politics and life. Tim Russert was to politics what a nice warm blanket is in the middle of winter — total comfort.

Forgotten but not gone

As gigs go in this troubled economy, it’s not so bad being a profoundly unpopular lame-duck president.

It’s finally time to dump the pump!

Everyday the media announces a new increase in crude oil prices and gas pump prices.

Barack Obama’s word is worthless

Recently, Sen. Barack Obama broke a promise he made to the American people. He refused to take part in public financing for the general election.

When private sex goes public

The government has no right to dictate what two consenting adults do together in the privacy of their bedroom. Let us reiterate — in the privacy of their bedroom!

The cost of gas and vacation

School’s out. No matter what the calendar might say, for all intents and purposes, it is summer.  And it’s time to travel, right?

Investment
Investment

America’s investment in the war in Iraq.

Rainy days and Mondays

OK, kids, I know that the Carpenters are so old school that they’re off the radar. Much of what I like seems to be old school.

Lawmakers must fix traffic gridlock

On Monday, June 23, Prince William’s state legislators return to Richmond to take care of unfinished business during a special session on transportation.

Focus on something other than the negative

Once again I bought a local Potomac News newspaper this morning in the hopes that I could renew my subscription, but I was subjected to the usual opinion pieces bashing Republicans, McCain in particular, and the current administration in general.

Virginians shouldn’t be the only ones to pay

It’s beyond me why someone that one would suspect is fairly intelligent would continue to go back to the same well with regards to taxation of Virginia citizens.

Barack Obama: A wolf in sheep’s clothing?

My letter is in response to Larry Remener’s letter on June 8, when he came to Obama’s defense of why it doesn’t matter that Obama REFUSES to wear an American flag pin. Mr. Remener — have you ever wore a pin bearing the American flag?

Putting our own house in order

For once, a government official is exercising some good sense. Gov. Timothy M. Kaine has ordered that the state Department of Corrections scrap its plan to rent Virginia prison beds to other states.

Pump up the volume, pay the price

In 1971, British rockers T. Rex, lead by singer Marc Bolan, encouraged listeners in their second U.K. No. 1 song to “get it on, bang a gong, get it on.”

What penalty is there for VDOT?

Why is it that every time Richmond announces a new transportation plan, the costs fall squarely on the shoulders of Virginians? Don’t we have just a few out-of-state drivers passing through our
commonwealth?

Transportation planning in the state of Virginia

The Special Legislative Session called by Gov. Tim Kaine to deal with the commonwealth’s transportation problems begins on June 23. There have been many proposals to fix transportation: The governor has proposed a plan that increases several taxes.

Parking enforcement done right at the mall

I think Potomac Mills is doing exactly right in their enforcement of parking. I listen to what each of the people had to say on the news and find them to be very rude.

McCain’s experience is not what we want

The Republican presidential nominee, John “Older than the Golden Gate Bridge” McCain, has a lot of government experience.

A housing rebound

These are some of the online reader reactions to a June 16 story about a decrease in the number of foreclosures and an increase in home sales in Prince William County.

Equal time on big oil contributions

Just to give the GOP equal time, as referenced in http://www.opensecrets.org, in the last report period (March 31, 2008), Exxon Mobil contributed $18,801 to Senator John McCain in the 2008 fundraising cycle.

The disastrous reign of the Bush administration

Have you ever had one of those AAARRGH! moments? I had one a couple of days ago when I opened the Potomac News and read about how President George W. Bush had finally decided that perhaps we needed to strengthen the American dollar.

The key to success
The key to success

Half price gas is the key to success.

When abortion is not a choice

I oppose abortion, because taking the innocent life of an unborn child is wrong, and inconsistent with the respect for life embodied in the foundations of our country. One look at an ultrasound reveals the human qualities of the unborn. I was reminded of this when I saw the fetuses with their tiny hands and feet presented at the recent “Bodies” exhibit crossing the country.

Radar love?

There is nothing like making people aware of their bad behavior to get them to cut it out. When it comes to speeding, this is especially true.

Save global warming for winter

If the rain and humidity in Prince William got you down earlier this week, some of you may take comfort in knowing that I am becoming human toast under the cloudless skies of Arizona.

Habeus corpus remains standing

Recently, the Supreme Court overturned the Bush administration’s attempt to throw out the writ of habeas corpus (the right of a prisoner to face his accusers and be told why he is being held).
