RICHMOND – Del. Robert G. “Bob” Marshall, R-13th District, and Del. Todd Gilbert, R-15th District, will hold a press conference at 10:30 a.m. Monday to discuss their failed bills that would have allowed faculty, staff and students to carry concealed handguns on campus with a valid Virginia Concealed Carry Permit.

Members of the Students for Concealed Carry on Campus will join them in the House Briefing Room of the General Assembly Building.

Both HB 424, sponsored by Marshall, and Gilbert’s HB 1371 were left in committee effectively killing them for the 2008 session. However, Marshall has repeatedly tried to introduce amendments to both the Budget and Senate legislation dealing with campus safety only to be stymied on the floor, he said today in a news release.

“Several professors have come to me asking me to give them the tools to protect their students. Potential killers need to know that Virginia’s Colleges and Universities are not ‘gun free zones’ where no one will be able to stop them from killing as many people as they can, Marshall wrote in the release.

He credited campus police with doing an excellent job but said there are not enough police to be in every place at every time.

“If there is a professor or student with a concealed weapon who can stop a killer until the police arrive that can mean the difference in lives saved or lost on our campuses,” Marshall wrote.

Marshall says he wants the House leadership to reconsider the bills this year in the wake of further shootings around the country and the lockdown this week at Ferrum College in southern Virginia.

kgotthardt - what did the bills have to do with high schools??  These are colleges and then it was only for people 21 and older.  Now when I went to highschool we did not have too many 21 year olds enrolled….

Yup…Mashall obviously has been out of school way too long to know what he’s talking about.  Either that or he’s never been to a school in the city or has any idea what happens in high schools throughout the country.  Sure…let’s incite Columbine but on campus.  Good idea BOB.  NOT.

Every time someone looks into liberalizing any gun laws the anti gun crowd, such as phdee and BIS1 here, claim more deaths and mayhem will result.  Blood in the streets and cats will be seen with dogs and all of the social infrastructure will immediately crumble…and it NEVER happens.  Law after law in state after state for the past 10 to 15 years has been swinging more and more pro-gun and crime goes down.  Even a study done for the anti-gun Clinton administration said that guns were used defensively over 1 million times per year.  There are other, neutral studies, that place that number at 2.5 million times per year.  The Virginia Citizen’s Defense League (google VCDL) has it right….Guns SAVE Lives!

“How many kids do you think would die per year, if drunk college kids had access to guns. “

My guess would be the same number.  If a person takes the time to apply for and get a consealed weapon they know that drinking alcohol is not allowed.  Please don’t be general with your comments-if you know of any examples where a lisenced person shot another person because they were drunk, car accident, looked a them funny-please inform me.  All the shootings one hears about are NOT done by lisenced carriers.

How many do you think would have been killed in the churh in Colorado if not for the actions of a person with a carry lisence?

When seconds count the police are minutes away.

Licensed concealed carriers carry their weapon a lot of places that you go every day. These are not usually the people that you hear about committing mass shootings, robberies or even settling an argument with their weapon. That would usually be the unlicensed carriers. In order to obtain the license, you must complete training, pass a test, pay an application fee, then meet certain criteria before it is issued. Most that go thru that process do it because they want to obey the law. Most ‘drunk college kids’ won’t bother, really. And they already have access to guns, the last couple of college shootings prove that. It is an unfortunate fact that there are already too many guns in the wrong hands. The police can’t be everywhere at once. ‘Wild West’ is an asinine exaggeration. Licensed concealed carry is already legal in the U.S., but it hasn’t become ‘Wild West’. Allowing these licensed carriers to carry on campus would not be any different except that there may just be someone there to save lives next time.

I wonder if phdee has any better ideas.  If not, it would appear that phdee is the assinine and stupid looney.

An armed society is a polite society.
