The Quantico Town Council got a bit of new blood following Tuesday’s election, but how much won’t be known until today.
Newcomer Virginia L. Macfarlan and incumbent Mary Lou Angell DiMarzio were tied with 44 votes each for the last of five seats on the town council, according to the Virginia State Board of Elections.
Macfarlan said one provisional vote that would not be counted until election officials are able to determine whether it is a legal one.
If not, Macfarlan said officials would draw the winner’s name from a hat.
Either outcome would be fine for Macfarlan, she said.
“I help around town, anyway,” the 12-year resident of Quantico said of what she’ll do if she doesn’t win. “You can go to the meetings and still have input.”
DiMarzio could not be reached for comment Tuesday night.
Securing a two-year term as mayor was Quantico Vice Mayor Iris Ross Tharp, who ran unopposed.
She replaces incumbent Mayor Albert “Al” Gasser, who won a seat on the council with 52 votes.
Also returning to the council are Mitchel P. Raftelis and Russell V. “Rusty” Kuhns, according to the board of elections.
But the one who got the most votes — 75 — is Kevin P. Brown, who for now is the only new member on the council.
The only incumbent unseated in the election was William J. Unrine, who came in last with 34 votes. Two others, Florence “FoFo” Petkoson and Nyla Kay Sidler, were also unsuccessful in their bids for council.
