The word “Posts” is on the back of a gray t-shirt Sahar Aflaki put on following Monday’s North-west Region quarterfinal. It reminds the Battlefield forward how unfortunate she is when attempt-ing to score goals during practice and games.
“I would hit the post or the crossbar,” Aflaki said.
Aflaki’s luck has quickly turned around. She scored four goals to lead Battlefield’s girls’ soccer team past Franklin County 6-0 in the opening round of the region tournament.
Battlefield’s win marks the first time in school history the Bobcats (18-1) will play in a region semifinal.
“We finally broke the curse,” Aflaki said.
Aflaki began making her teammates believe that they would move past the quarterfinals with three first period goals.
She used her speed on the first, outracing a Franklin County defender and scoring from the left side of the field to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead.
Aflaki’s second goal followed one by Jessye Jewell. Aflaki received a pass from Jewell and kicked it into the top corner of the net. Her third came on a breakaway and gave Battlefield a 4-0 halftime advantage.
Her scoring continued in the second half as did Aflaki’s ability to improve her chemistry with Jewell. Jewell centered a pass to Aflaki, who recorded her final goal.
“They have great chemistry,” Bobcats coach Kevin Hilton said. “They play off each other so well and they’ve been doing that since the beginning of the year.
“They both are experienced playing forward so they understand the game and how to work off each other.”
Aflaki knows Jewell and her teammates try to get her the ball and put her in position to use her strengths.
“They know my dominant foot’s right,” Aflaki said. “They know what angle I’m best at. They know I have that speed to make that cut or run through that defender.”
The Bobcats meet either Colonial Forge or Forest Park on Wednesday in a semifinal match at 6 p.m. at Battlefield.
Before then, Aflaki will ponder the removal of “Posts” from her shirt for the word “Nets” seeing as she had no trouble finding the net on Monday.
“We’ll see,” she said.
