Britt Hoover secured the ball in his stick. He quickly turned to face the Potomac net.
He spotted Matt Mullins behind the cage and lofted a pass to him.
The ball secure in Mullins’ stick, he moved to the front of the net and fired a turnaround shot past Potomac goalkeeper Austin Thomas.
Battlefield was again celebrating a goal involving Hoover and Mullins. At least one of those at-tack was in on seven goals in leading Battlefield to a 12-0 win over Potomac (1-1).
“We’ve definitely come a long way since last year,” Hoover said. “Hopefully we can keep it up.”
That Hoover and Mullins were as sharp on Tuesday and during Battlefield’s two previous games this year is not surprising. They honed their skills and established camaraderie playing for the travel Generals lacrosse team during the off-season.
“We built our bond off that and have worked hard in practice,” Hoover said.
Hoover scored four goals in Battlefield’s wins over Colonial Forge and Centreville and Mullins scored three in his first varsity game on March 15.
Mullins, a junior, faces the task of making the transition to a higher level.
“It’s definitely a lot more aggressive,” Mullins said. “The offense moves on you a lot faster. I learn from my teammates. They teach me to keep my head up. Don’t force the ball.”
After Hoover’s first of five goals gave Battlefield a 2-0 lead, he scored the Bobcats’ third off a pass from Mullins. Hoover scored Battlefield’s sixth goal, and later its final goal with 6:38 left in regula-tion.
The third member of the attack got in on the scoring as well. Andrew Felt recorded two goals and an assist.
Starting 3-0 makes Battlefield see the fruits of its labor pay off. With that comes high confidence. With high confidence come high expectations.
“Our program’s four years old and the guys who’ve been with me have been working hard,” Bobcats coach Kevin Marsh said. “This is our year to hopefully get wins under our belt. Our goal was to get over .500. That’s still going slowly, but we’ll work hard to get wins.”
