Battlefield softball blanks Centreville in opener

Battlefield High School pitchers Megan Sutphin and Brittany Black combined for a one-hit shut-out, striking out 17, in the Bobcats’ 2-0 victory over Centreville on Wednesday.
Shannon Cleary went 2 for 4 as Battlefield won its season opener.
• STONEWALL JACKSON 3, FOREST PARK 2: Krystal Smith was 2 for 3 at the plate, driving in Corinna Northcutt from second base with the deciding run to open the Raiders’ season with a victory.
Melissa Kirby held the Bruins (0-1) to just one earned run in a complete game effort. Kirby struck out six while allowing five hits.
• BRENTSVILLE 8, LIBERTY 5: Grace Nordan struck out 11 on her way to a complete seven innings to earn the Tigers’ first win of the year. Becky Tucker was 2 for 3 with three runs scored including a homer.
Kaitlyn Barbour led Brentsville with three runs batted in on a 2 for 4 performance that included a double. Abby Carpenter added two doubles while going 3 of 4 at the plate and driving in two and scoring twice. Emily Neitzke had a double in her two-hit night and Devon Hileman was 2 for 3.
BASEBALL
• WOODBRIDGE 11, BROOKE POINT 1: Woodbridge’s baseball team kicked off its season with an 11-1, non-district win over Brooke Point on Wednesday.
Catcher Tyler Bonta had a grand slam, while Phillip Henry and Chris Scott both had two RBI.
Tyler Stout struck out two in four innings while giving up two hits and an unearned run.
• BRENTSVILLE 4, LIBERTY 3: Brentsville held on for a win, thanks to an insurance run driven in by Tyler Legrand with a single in the seventh.
Scott Betterly went 2 for 4 with an RBI for the Tigers (1-0) and Andrew Johnson went 1 for 2 with a run scored and two RBI.
Brentsville pitcher Austin Hale tossed three innings, allowed no runs one hit and recorded two strikeouts to get the win.
GIRLS SOCCER
• BATTLEFIELD 4, HYLTON 0: Jessica Jewell-Sharma scored twice and Sahar Aflacki and Ka-tie Ostrovecky added one more each as the Bobcats open the year 1-0. Dominique Evans assisted on Jewell-Sharma’s first goals with all other scores unassisted.
Kristen Norkus made four saves for Battlefield as Hylton’s (0-1) keeper, Danielle Nonaka, re-corded six.
• OSBOURN PARK 10, POTOMAC 0: Charlotte Rodina scored two goals and Amanda Harton scored twice and registered two assists to lead the Yellow Jackets to a season-opening win.
Carley Blair scored twice. Also scoring were Bethany Bayles, Maryellen Derenda, Erin McNa-mara and Gabby Wilson.
Brittney Purdham and Ashley Wyberski both had an assist.
• BRENTSVILLE 2, LIBERTY 1: Emma Bright and Kelsey Reighard scored for the Tigers (1-0) and Ashley Grant registered an assist.
Brentsville goalkeeper Erica Propps made seven saves.
Kaity Ruhland scored Liberty’s goal and Liberty goalkeeper Megan Rossoman made nine saves.
BOYS SOCCER
• BATTLEFIELD 2, STAFFORD 1, OT: Troy Allaire scored the winning goal after Kofi Brook-man scored the tying goal with a minute left in regulation.
Battlefield goalkeepers Alan Hinton and Michael Hinkle combined for four saves. Duke Mensah also helped the Bobcats.
• BRENTSVILLE 0, LIBERTY 0: Goalkeeper Michael Madigan had two saves for Brentsville in its season opener.
Blake Weiss made nine saves as Liberty’s goalkeeper.
The Tigers fired 15 shots to four for the Eagles.
BOYS TENNIS
• BATTLEFIELD 8, OSBOURN 1: The Bobcats got singles victories from No. 1 Justin Riley (7-6 [7-5], 1-6, 6-4), No. 3 Brandon Malley (3-6, 6-3, 6-0), No. 4 Peter Jones (7-5, 6-1), No. 5 John Pastore (6-3, 6-2) and No. 6 Luke Persian (6-4, 6-3).
Battlefield began their doubles wins accepting an injury forfeit in the top match that included Ri-ley and Malley. No. 2 doubles team Pastore and Alex Mann won 10-7 and the combination of Jones Persian finished the day with a 10-1 win at No. 3.
