Grant tallied a goal late in the first half and then assisted on Kelsey Reighard’s goal early in the second as Brentsville’s girls soccer team stayed perfect with a 3-0 win over Millbrook.
“I got a good cross pass from [Kimmy] Hopkins,” said Grant. “I stopped it with my chest and their goal-keeper was in good position. I was just able to get into the right corner.”
The Tigers dominated the action from the start of the game but were unable to get anything on the score-board until Grants’ tally.
Grant missed the majority of the second half due to an injury to her right ankle.
Brentsville Coach Sean Weddel said Grant’s attitude is what makes her such a special player.
“She’s one of those dynamite players but is modest,” said Weddel. “She’s a team player through and through, and she actually wanted to come back into the game after she hurt her ankle.”
Brentsville (6-0, 5-0) got their third goal from Julianna Willis. Willis put home a rebound that came out to the right corner of the Millbrook goalkeeper.
Reighard’s and Willis’ goals came in the first 4:19 of the second half.
“I just told the girls at halftime that they needed to play hungry,” said Weddel. “They needed that extra push.”
The Brentsville defense did their part as they did not allow Millbrook to get across midfield until the 28:15 mark of the first half.
The Pioneers did not get their first shot of the game until there were 28:32 left in the game.
The Tigers kept the pressure on Millbrook despite the comfortable advantage.
Brentsville seniors Mariate Sanchez and Jessica Bunner both missed on shots late in the game, while senior Ashley Wellens had a shot roll along the goaline.
“This is my first year as the head coach,” said Weddel. “The girls are really starting to come together and adjust to [my] style.”
