Bruins win Cardinal meet races

Forest Park’s cross country teams won the Cardinal District meet on Tuesday at Leesylvania Park.
Its girls’ team recorded 15 points and its boys’ team 23.
Forest Park sophomore Marisa Hess won the girls’ race in 20:17. The Bruins grabbed the top five spots and six of the top eight.
Hess’s teammate, Alison Dunleavy, came in second in 20:20. Forest Park’s Gabby Owermohle (20:26) was third, followed by Emily Cate (20:35) and Chelsea Jacobsen (20:45).
Gar-Field’s Theresa Tweedie came in sixth (20:47) followed by Potomac’s Eboni Strawder (21:04) and Forest Park’s Ashley Hess (21:07).
Hylton finished second in the girls’ competition with 116 points, followed by Potomac (141) and Freedom (142).
Andre Poindexter of Potomac won the boys’ race in 16:47. But the Bruins were again strong in that race with five finishers in the top eight spots.
Tyler Iwanicki led the Bruins by finishing second (16:57) and teammate Josh Colcombe (17:02) was third.
Forest Park’s Kyle Swanson was fourth (17:07) with Jacob Mesler sixth (17:19) and Alex Cord eighth (17:35).
Gar-Field’s Prince Owusu was fifth (17:17) and Hylton’s Brandon Toress seventh (17:21).
Hylton was second in the boys’ team scores with 72 points. Gar-Field was third (91) and Woodbridge fourth (165).
The meet was the final tuneup before the Oct. 23 district postseason meet.
Coaches use regular season weekday meets to run their younger athletes and give them a feel for the course so they are ready for next week’s meet.
“We wanted to get the jitters out,” Forest Park coach Andy Tramel said. “We got most of them out today.”
