Joe Buttgereit’s fourth and final trip to the Group AAA state golf tournament finished on a high note.
The Forest Park High School senior finished fifth overall at the two-day tournament that concluded Tuesday at the Independence Golf Club in Midlothian. And he did so by winning a two-hole playoff.
Buttgereit sank a 40-foot chip shot on his second hole for birdie to break the tie.
“I did exactly what I wanted to do with it,” said Buttgereit, who finished tied for ninth last year as a junior. “I got lucky that it fell in.”
Buttgereit finished with a two-day total of 148 after shooting a 73 on Tuesday. He rallied down the stretch after making birdies at the 14th, 16th and 17th holes to force the playoff with Centreville’s Noori Hyun.
Buttgereit was one of three local golfers to place in the top 10.
Teammate Mitch O’Shell and Battlefield’s Andrew Lister tied for seventh with two other golfers with a two-day final score of 150.
A junior, O’Shell was making his first state tournament appearance.
“It was my putting the first day where I was making everything,” O’Shell said. “For the second day, it was my overall play.”
A sophomore, Lister was making his second straight state tournament appearance. Last year, he was Battlefield”s first-ever representative in states.
“He managed the course well,” Battlefield coach John Tillman said. “You could see him thinking ahead.”
Cox’s Brinson Paolini won the individual title with a 141.
Team-wise, Battlefield, which was making its first-ever state tournament appearance, finished sixth with a score of 621. Besides Lister, Justin Riley shot a 78, John Williams a 79 and Blake Forst an 80 on the second day.
James River won the team title with a score of 606 followed by Kellam (612), Westfield (615), Deep Run (616), Langley (620), Battlefield, Cox (622) and Loudoun Valley (635).
