It was just the second hit of the game for the Tigers, but proved to be one of the most important as it tied the game.
“I was just hoping that I got it down,” said Weaver of his game-tying single. “I knew I didn’t hit it well at all, so I was just hoping it would drop somehow.”
James Kerns’ double three batters later scored Weaver, Justin Frazier and Brian McBride as the Tigers clinched their first Northwestern District Tournament title with a 5-2 win.
“I was thinking we won the game,” said Kerns of what was going through his mind as he stood on second base. “We finally did it. We won districts and now we’re going on to regionals.”
The Tigers play their first Region II playoff game Wednesday.
“They gave me a few more gray hairs,” said Brentsville coach Brian Knight. “But we got a little confi-dence as the game went on.”
For the second straight day, Weaver was the Tigers’ difference maker. He hit a grand slam in the bottom of the fourth inning of Wednesday’s 10-3 semifinal win over Sherando and now has six RBI in his last two games.
“I was struggling a bit for a few games,” said Weaver. “But, I found my stroke.”
Knight said if his team had a most valuable player it was without a doubt Weaver, who humbly replied, “Sounds good to me,” when asked what he thought of Knight’s comment.
Jonathan Desilets pitched the final three innings and, for the second straight night, needed to face only four batters in the top of the seventh to seal the Brentsville win.
Andrew Johnson’s single in the bottom of the third inning was the only hit the Tigers had gotten off of James Wood starter Cory Asberry heading into the bottom of the sixth. Asberry’s wild pitch to first base-man Hayden Gilmer allowed Tyler LeGrand to reach third which set up Weaver’s heroics.
“We did hit the ball hard a few times, but [James Wood] was playing deep so they were right at the ball every time,” said Knight. “But that’s what we’ve been doing all year; taking advantage of other teams mis-takes.”
