Woodbridge track coach Adam Daniels put a huge emphasis on winning The Running Store City County Championships.

"At the beginning of the season, one of our goals was to win the county championships," Daniels said.

Battlefield track coach Paul Mobley wants his teams to save their energy for the Cedar Run, Northwest Region and Group AAA state meets.

"We did not curve our hard workouts at all to peak at this meet," Mobley said.

Whatever the approach, the Woodbridge boys' and Battlefield girls' track teams are Prince William County's best with wins in Saturday's meet.

"It means a lot," Daniels said. "We knew we had a good shot at doing this."

Woodbridge won with 143.5 points, beating Cedar Run District champion Battlefield (111.5) and Northwest Region indoor champion Potomac (76).

Woodbridge's biggest performances came from Andre Washington, who won the 300-meter hurdles (40.20) and was second in the 110-meter hurdles (15.34) and Gustavo Osorio, the pole vault winner (10-06.00).

Kelvin Lewis also helped the Vikings with third-place finishes in the 100 (11.50) and 400 (49.99) and a second in the 200 (22.55).

Freshman Isaiah Simmons came through with a third in the shot put (43-05.00) and second in the discus (128-08).

The Vikings also won the 1600-relay (3:25.80).

With those performances, the goal is for Woodbridge to continue its momentum for the postseason.

"Districts, regionals and states is obviously where we want to perform the best," Daniels said. "What happened here was great. It was everybody starting to run really well. A lot of guys stepped up today."

The Bobcats used their talent in sprint and field events to record high finishes. Senior Kim Blaylock won the 100 (12.68) and placed second in the 200 (25.90).

Junior Diana Budreika, who arrived late after taking the ACT in the morning, was third in the 3200 (11:55.24).

The Bobcats won the 400-relay (50.17). Audrey Stiles was second in the triple jump (33-05.25) and Nikisha Walker won the 100-meter hurdles (16.09).

Team performances were not the meet's only highlight. Fourteen individual and three relay records were set in the meet's second year.

"People are taking it more seriously," said Brentsville junior Mariama Bello, who improved on her 100-00 throw from last year to win this year's discus. "It's not just like a jayvee meet like some people considered it last year.

"It's a real important meet and they want to be top in the county."

It also gives others a gauge for the remainder of the season.

"It gives me something to look at, see what I can work on," said Hylton senior Noah Hagos, who won the 1600-meter run in a meet record 4:30.37.

That is exactly how Mobley sees it.

"It gives me a real good idea of how they can perform in a big meet under pressure," Mobley said. "I learn a lot about the athletes and what they're able to do and what they can handle, what races I can put them in. I start to piece together the team for the championship season in May."
