The last head football coach vacancy in the Capital District has been filled.

Loren Johnson was named coach at Highland Springs High after the Henrico County School Board approved his appointment yesterday. Johnson, 30, fills the opening left by Scott Burton, who left after nine years as the Springers coach to become an assistant at the University of Richmond.

The Springers followed the district’s youth movement with Johnson’s hiring. Stu Brown at Varina and Jason Meade at Lee-Davis are 35 and younger. Henrico hired veteran Roger Brookes, who is 58.

Highland Springs is Johnson’s second head coaching job. He has been at Stonewall Jackson for five years. The Raiders compiled a 25-27 record during his tenure. He officially submitted his resignation a week ago.

Stonewall was 9-3 in 2004 and lost to C.D. Hylton in the Northwest Region, Division 6 final.

The Raiders were 2-8 in 2003, 5-5 in 2005 and 2006 and 4-6 last fall when injuries to standout running backs Ryan Williams and Damien Thigpen short circuited their success after the team began the season 3-1.

Williams has signed with Virginia Tech, while Thigpen has received six Division I offers.

Johnson graduated from Virginia Tech. He was all-Big East Conference as a defensive back.

The Highland Springs community, players and parents will have an opportunity to meet Johnson tonight at 6:30 at a gathering in the school auditorium.

Under Burton, the Springers made the playoffs seven straight seasons.

Wow can this guy find a job fast ! Last week he had no idea what he was doing with his 25-27 record and now he is a head coach?  What is the big news about Head Football coaches and AD’s leaving after 1-5 years ? There are teachers that teach for 30 years that do more for kids and never get any press for their dedication to the job. What ever happen to the wrestling results ?
