Lack of depth does not hurt Gar-Field

The stern look came across Francesca McClaude’s face as she prepared to triple jump.
McClaude should have been focused with the 15-point deficit Gar-Field faced heading into day two of the Cardinal District track and field meet.
With only four athletes entered in the six field events, the Indians had little margin for error.
So McClaude delivered a long jump and triple jump win and Celina Vanegas and Noelia Ramirez won the pole vault and discus, respectively to help Gar-Field claim the district crown with 160 points.
“Everybody did great,” McClaude said. “Everybody came through where they needed to.”
Gar-Field entered only 15 athletes in the 17-team girls’ competition, forcing several athletes to compete in more than one event.
Vanegas began day two by doing the pole vault at Forest Park. She arrived at Freedom with the high jump, long jump and triple jump still on her agenda.
Aubree Washington spent day one running the 400-meter dash, 800 and 3200-relay.
McClaude’s first day schedule included the 100-meter hurdles and 400-relay and Monique Scott ran the 800-meter run, 1600-relay and 3200-relay on day one.
But instead of allowing the lack of depth to deter them, Gar-Field’s athletes let their competitive edge take over.
“I was pushing it really hard,” Vanegas said. “I had to motivate myself to do better, to run faster, to jump higher. It felt good.”
Woodbridge’s boys’ team certainly had to focus on getting points after trailing Potomac by nine entering the second day.
The Vikings performed well after coach Adam Daniels voiced his displeasure with his team’s performance after completion of the running events.
Isaiah Simmons won the shot put (46-10.00) and took second in the discus with a personal-best throw of 142-02. Josh Christovich took second in the high jump (6-00) and Greg Coopwood was third in the shot put (42-10.00).
“I’m excited,” Simmons said. “We won an indoor district title and we were hoping to do it in out-door.”
