Leyen, Barnes capture Division MAYBE titles

Tristan Leyen, age 8, of Perry Hall, Md., in third grade at Chapel Hill Elementary School, won the Handicap Division and Andrew Barnes, age 21, of Charlotte, N.C., attending the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, won the Scratch Division of the Mid-Atlantic Youth Bowling Extravaganza, a scholarship tournament, hosted by Bowl America Glen Burnie, Md., on Mar. 9.
• Handicap Division. It took a cumulative score of 1,296 or higher, pinfall and handicap, for the 6-game qualifying round for the top 15 athletes to advance to the head-to-head 1-game single elimination match play rounds.
Following the rounds of 15 and 8, the top four bowlers advanced to the semifinal matches.
In the round of 4, Samuel Summers, age 14, of Mechanicsville, Md., a freshman at King's Christian Academy, defeated Marcus Smith, age 17, of Clinton, Md., a senior at Gwynn Park High School, 277-205; and Tristan Leyen defeated Douglas Tyler, age 17, of Clinton, Md., a freshman at Surratsville High Schyool, 231-221. Tyler earned a $45 scholarship for his 3rd place finish; and Smith earned a $45 scholarship for his 4th place finish.
In the championship round, Leyen defeated Summers, 287-281. Leyen was presented a $110 scholarship for winning the division and Summers received a $70 scholarship for his 2nd place finish.
• Scratch Division. It took a total pinfall of 1,252 or higher for the 6-game qualifying round, a 208.66 average, for the top 15 athletes to advance to the head-to-head 1-game single elimination match play rounds.
Following the rounds of 15 and 8, the top four bowlers advanced to the semifinal matches.
In the round of 4, Andrew Barnes defeated Josh Bugtai, age 16, of Clinton, Md., a junior at Grace Brethren Christian School, 203-169; and Douglas Tonucci, age 13, of Waldorf, Md., in eighth grade at Davis Middle School, defeated Wayne Artist, age 18, of Waldorf, Md., a graduate of McDonough High School, 222-168. Bugtai earned a $45 scholarship for his 3rd place finish; and Artist eartned a $45 scholarship for his 4th place finish.
In the championship round, Barnes defeated Tonucci, 248-146. Barnes was presented a $110 scholarship for winning the division and Tonucci received a $70 scholarship for his 2nd place finish.
NCAUSBCA ANNUAL AND YOUTH MEETINGS
The Nation's Capital Area United States Bowling Congress Association will hold its annual meeting at the Holiday Inn (Tel: 703-960-3400), 2460 Eisenhower Avenue, Alexandria, Va., on Mar. 30, from 1 p.m.—3:30 p.m.
This meeting is open to all members of the Nation's Capital Area U.S. Bowling Congress Association. Registration of league delegates and attendees begins at 10:30 a.m.
All attendees will be required to present their USBC membership card to be admitted to the meetings.
A youth representation meeting will be held from 11 a.m. to noon. All youth leagues are entitled to send one league official and one youth bowler to this meeting. Youth representatives will elect youth directors for the NCAUSBCA and delegates to the Virginia State Youth Bowling Association. Only those youth bowlers age 14 and older may vote.
Lunch will be served from noon to 1 p.m.
Attendees to the annual NCAUSBCA meeting will hear reports from the Board of Directors, elect association officers, vote on delegates to the annual USBC Convention and meetings of the Virginia State Women's USBC Association and the (Men's) Virginia State USBC Association.
In addition, attendees will vote on proposed changes to the USBC operating procedures and playing rules.
All NCAUSBCA leagues should insure a league representative attends this important meeting.
