OP’s Mogavero celebrates all-around title

Osbourn Park High School freshman Sara Mogavero won a Level 9 state all-around champion-ship last weekend in Virginia Beach — topping the 15-year-old division with a score of 35.425.
Mogavero, competing for the GMS club team in Manassas, also topped a field of 10 competitors on two individual events by capturing gold medals on vault (9.0) and balance beam (9.275).
She edged the Chantilly Academy duo of Angelique Cross (35.25) and Shannon Bliss (34.975) for the meet’s top honor.
GMS teammate Erin Turner, a sophomore at Battlefield High School, finished fourth in the all-around with a score of 34.650.
In the 17-year-old division, North Stafford’s Carissa Potente won the state vault championship and was third in the all-around, while Savaughna McClary, of Youth Sports, was second overall in the 18-year-old division.
Tandeece Mazloum, also from Battlefield, was a Level 8 state champion on the balance beam in the 16-year-old division. She placed second in the all-around with a score of 35.425, while Apollo’s Samantha Cotton placed fifth out of 20 competitors in the 12-year-old division.
KEATING WINS
BEAM TITLE IN LEVEL 10
Courtney Keating, of Capital, won medals on all four events and placed second in the Level 10 all-around competition at the state meet held at Oscar Smith High School.
Keating, competing in the 14-year-old division, scored 35.650 points overall and was a gold medal winner on the balance beam (9.175). She claimed a silver medal on the floor and earned bronze medals on vault and uneven bars.
River City’s Alyssa Seay was the all-around champion with a score of 36.125.
APOLLO BOYS EXCEL
AT STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
In his first year as a Level 7 gymnast, Apollo’s Michael Deitz captured a state all-around champi-onship as well as individual titles on three events.
Deitz, who competed in the 12-&-older division, qualified for the Region VII championships in Allentown, PA on April 12-13 with an overall score of 53.35. He won the floor exercise (9.45), pommel horse (9.0) and high bar (8.3), while taking second place on the parallel bars.
Teammate Juan Palma won a Level 6 state all-around championship in the 12-&-older division — scoring 9.8 on rings and 9.6 on vault) — as Apollo won the state team title behind regional qualify-ing performances from Rashaad Mahmood, Joseph Rubin and Tomas Palma, who won the all-around title in the 10-11 age division.
The Level 6 regional meet is scheduled for April 26-27 at Temple University.
Apollo’s Level 4 team also finished first behind a championship all-around performance from Brandon Laitinen in the 10-11 age group.
Sean Bouchery (6-7 age division) and Omari Ferguson (8-9) were second-place finishers, while Christopher Dana (8-9) placed fourth overall, while Michael Gushock and Christopher Peck per-formed well in their first Level 4 state meet.
In Level 5, Erik Del Cid (age 7-9) and Jesse Gibson (age 10-11) won silver medals in the all-around and new team member Tyler Mullen qualified for regionals in Philadelphia on April 26.
DEITZ TO COMPETE
IN NATIONAL MEET
Osbourn Park senior Kayla Deitz has been selected to the Virginia squad that will compete in the High School Gymnastics Senior Showcase in St. Petersburg, FL on May 22-23.
Deitz, who was a three-time state champion during her high school career, is the only area gym-nast competing in the national championship meet.
During her final season, Deitz captured a share of the Cedar Run District floor exercise champi-onship and scored 36.2 points in the all-around to help the Yellow Jackets win the state title for the second straight season.
YOUTH SPORTS BOYS
SHINE AT STATE MEET
The Youth Sports boys gymnastics team combined to win over 30 medals at the state champion-ship meet in Virginia Beach and qualified a record 12 individuals for the Region VII championships later this month.
Griffin Kehler won a Level 6 all-around championship in the 7-to-9 age division and also won in-dividual state titles on floor exercise (9.45), pommel horse (9.0), rings (9.75), vault (9.45) and parallel bars (9.45). He took second place on the horizontal bars.
Four other Youth Sports gymnasts won state titles as Kevin Cespedes claimed the Level 4 paral-lel bars title (9.3) in the 10-to-11 age division and Aaron Dorego won the Level 4 state floor exercise title in the 12-older division. Scott Harris placed second in the all-around with 63.1 points in the 12-15 division, highlighted by an individual gold medal on floor exercise, and William Spinks won a Level 8 state title on vault en route to taking a silver medal in the 16-18 all-around competition.
Other top performers included:
• Jay Woods placed second on parallel bars and third on the rings and horizontal bars in Level 5.
• Minhquang Vo finished second on the pommel horse in Level 6.
• Bryce Sampson was a state runner-up in the Level 7 all-around competition, scoring 52.1 points. He also took second place on floor, rings and horizontal bars in the 12-older division.
• Timmy Roberts, also competing in the 16-18 age group, was a state runner-up on floor and paral-lel bars and earned a bronze medal in the Level 8 all-around.
• In Level 10, James Bapple finished second on the pommel horse and second on vault in the 14-15 age group.
• Quocan Vo took third place on the rings in Level 10.
• VietVuong Vo was a third place finisher on pommel horse and parallel bars in Level 10.
