Osbourn Park (5-1-1) used its speed, offensive spacing, and aggressiveness to take advantage of three out-standing opportunities. Meanwhile, Hylton (1—3-1) missed three strong chances on indirect kicks and saw three other shots sail well over the goal.
Hylton coach Lauren Brundage, whose team outshot Osbourn Park, 9-6., including the final two shots of the first half, said she was pleased with the Bulldogs’ early effort.
“I told the girls (at halftime) we had played our best game of the year and really gave them encouragement,” Brundage said. “If I had to pick one thing the game came down to it would be those three indirects that we ran right by and two or three breakaways that were (sure) goals. We played a more defensive first half and then I got more speed up top in the second half which led to more shots.”
Osbourn Park coach Rob Watters credited Hylton with a strong defensive effort.
“They are a good team and the final score is not indicative of the kind of team they are or the way they played,” Watters said. “I was pleased with the result but not the way we did it. We stopped playing the ball in the last 15 minutes of the first half and that was (disappointing).”
The Yellow Jackets scored in the thirteenth minute when senior forward Karen Bonilla took a crossing pass from senior midfielder, Maryellen Derenda, who will play for Radford next fall, and booted it into the right corner of the goal to give Osbourn Park a 1-0 lead.
Bonilla found junior midfielder Gaby Wilson open between two defenders in the 71st minute and Wilson laced it into the center of the goal to make it 2-0. Wilson scored again about seven minutes later, using her speed to split the defenders and drilling the ball past Hylton goalie Zuzy Abdala, who came too far out and missed on a dive.
Brundage said playing a team of Osbourn Park’s talent and aggressiveness was important with two key Cardinal District matchups ahead. The Bulldogs play Forest Park on Friday and Woodbridge on Tuesday.
“WIth Forest Park and Woodbridge coming up, it was important for us to face an aggressive team to show us what we are in for,” Brundage said. “Osbourn Park’s speed was absolutely a factor.”
