What was supposed to be a clash of two of the better prep girls’ soccer players in the area—Hylton’s Chrissy Parker and Woodbridge’s Kristen Lybert— ended up being a showcase for the offensive talent of the Woodbridge Vikings.
After Parker suffered a fractured tibia last Friday night against Forest Park, a young and un-dermanned Bulldog team gave the visiting Vikings a tough battle for a half Tuesday night before falling, 3-1, in a Cardinal District game.
Woodbridge (6-1 overall, 2-0 in district play) picked up its offensive intensity in the second half, outshooting Hylton, 9-3 and getting insurance goals from Shondel Archer and Casey Burdette in the half. Vikings coach Scott Kerns said he was pleased with his team’s increased intensity after half-time.
“I think with the injury to Parker, most of the girls would think they could come out here and get a win,” Kerns said. “But Hylton still has (junior Breiana) White and a lot of hustling talent. They will fight for every ball and the girls found out it wouldn’t be easy. I was very happy we came out with the intensity we did in the second half.”
Woodbridge also got a lift from its chief offensive weapon, Lybert, who blasted a cross into the left corner of the net in the tenth minute to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead.
The goal took some of the frustration out of a frustrating night for Lybert, who took six of the Vikings’ second half shots, blasting one over the goal, shooting another off the crossbar, and launching another one into the side of the net.
“It was really tough,” Lybert said of getting so many chances, but not converting. “Especially with our offense getting so many shots off. But I was very happy to score. It was a real lifter upper to get an early goal.”
Hylton (1-4-2, 0-1-1), which started six freshmen, used the speed of one of them—midfielder Mor-gan Mauck—to get several good chances in the first half. Mauck got into position three times, but once shot the ball right at goalkeeper Heather Harvey, once booted the ball out of bounds on a cross, and once stopped short after a one-on-one situation before fanning on the shot.
“I thought our freshmen played well,” Hylton coach Lauren Brundage said. “The girls knew with Chrissy out some others had to step up. But I don’t think they are used to the aggressiveness of a team like Woodbridge and I think we got tired (in the second half). Some of the problem is my not putting out a set lineup. I need to pick a lineup and stick with it.”
Hylton scored in the waning seconds when White blasted a shot from the right corner of the pen-alty box past backup goalkeeper Erin McAfee.
Brundage lauded the play of freshman defender Valerie Cathcart, who kept Woodbridge from getting good chances in the first half, and sophomore forward Vianka Membreno, who managed a couple shots in the second half.
