That stingy Battlefield defense came to play.
And the Bobcats’ offense was not bad either.
Battlefield used solid play on both sides of the ball to beat Loudoun Valley 42-0 and clinch its second straight Cedar Run District title.
“It’s big,” Battlefield quarterback Bo Revell said. “It’s our first 10-0 season,” in school history.
The Bobcats (10-0, 7-0) now have the Northwest Region playoffs on their mind. They host a regional semifinal game next Friday against either Osbourn (6-4, 6-1) or Hylton (6-3, 4-1 Cardinal District), depending on the final seeding based on Virginia High School League power ratings.
“Now we know it’s 0-0,” Revell said. “Last year we were favorites and we didn’t make it out of the first round. This year, I don’t think we’ll have that problem.”
A post-game celebration that saw fireworks go off adjacent to the school’s football field and Battlefield’s seniors get recognized ended with the players being presented with the Cedar Run championship trophy.
“This is a major accomplishment,” Battlefield coach Mark Cox said. “We may never have this opportunity again. Not many people can say they were 10-0 while playing high school football.”
The Bobcats have gone unbeaten with a defense whose execution continues to be great.
Loudoun Valley punted after three plays on two of its first three possessions of the first quarter.
The Vikings’ other possession ended on a fumble that Battlefield’s Jimmy Long recovered at the Viking 19-yard line.
Linebacker Matt Kenyon came up with two bone-jarring hits on Loudoun Valley’s final drive of the game and linebacker Drew Elias ended the last Vikings drive with an interception.
“They play with a lot of energy,” Revell said of his team’s defense.
Battlefield’s offense was also sharp.
The Bobcats took advantage of their first offensive possession to drive 80 yards in four plays.
The drive ended on running back Adrian Ingram’s 17-yard touchdown run.
Ingram scored on Battlefield’s next time on offense with a four-yard run.
The extra point from kicker Ben Burden put the Bobcats ahead 14-0.
Ingram’s backfield mate, Gerald Khosa, added his first touchdown of the game with a 33-yard run with just over two minutes to play in the first quarter.
Battlefield began that drive at Loudoun Valley’s 47-yard line after a punt from the Vikings’ Garrett Krumpe went only 12 yards.
Battlefield scored its final first half touchdown on a 37-yard rush from running back Sheldon Tapscott.
Tapscott’s run culminated a four-play drive that went 80 yards. Tapscott rushed the first two plays for 10 and nine yards.
A 24-yard scamper from Revell put the ball at the Loudoun Valley 37.
The Bobcats added two second half touchdowns, one on Khosa’s four-yard run, the other on Tapscott’s eight-yard run.
