In the 2008 season opener Thursday night in Dumfries, Battlefield wasted little time in showing why it has to be considered a favorite to win the Cedar Run District title for the second year.
Adrian Ingram asserted himself from his first rush against the Potomac Panthers, a Group AAA Division 5 state finalist a year ago, to the final whistle, scoring three times in the first half alone, leading Battlefield to a 41-0 victory to begin the campaign.
The Bobcats’ senior running back’s second score of the night came on a 49-yard sprint to the end zone, weaving through potential tacklers with ease on the first play of the drive. Ingram finished the night with 115 yards rushing, with all but five coming in the first two quarters.
“That’s a great win for our kids, beating a playoff team like that,” Battlefield coach Mark Cox said. “We have a list of who to (beat and) check off and Potomac’s a team we’ve never beaten. We wanted to check them off our list.”
Battlefield (1-0) jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter after striking twice within two minutes on the two Ingram rushes.
“Adrian got off to a good start, but our offensive line and our receivers did a good job down the field,” Cox said. “He had great blocking. And he had a couple nice cutbacks, too – he had pretty good vision.”
Bo Revell kept the Panthers’ defense honest with an effective passing game, completing 7 of 10 attempts for 151 yards and a touchdown.
With a running clock for much of the second half, Gerald Khosa was the beneficiary of the majority of Battlefield’s carries, racking up 52 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries.
Rickey Guillespie also saw time at quarterback, replacing Revell after the Bobcats reached 41 points 4:09 into the third quarter, but was relegated to handing off to Khosa with the substantial lead.
Cox was worried about a repeat of the performance his team produced last year in the Northwest Region semifinal against Woodbridge when the Bobcats took an early 17-0 lead but lost the game in the second half.
“Our guys hopefully learned from that game to not let up,”Cox said.
Potomac’s (0-1) losses from last year were apparent with little consistency for the offense. Quarterback DeAirius Thomas struggled to connect with receivers particularly in the first half, completing passes just twice in six tries for 20 yards. He finished the night 2 for 9.
Andre Cook led the team offensively with just 23 yards on nine rushes.
