Baker has big day from plate for the Rockie
Jeff Baker (Gar-Field High School) had three hits and two RBI and scored three runs to help Colorado finish off a four-game sweep of Pittsburgh Sunday with an 11-3 win in Denver.
Baker hit a two-run homer (his seventh of the season) in the fifth inning off Pirate starting pitcher Zach Duke.
Matt Holliday also homered and had three hits while Aaron Cook won his team-leading 12th game.
Cook (12-6) was roughed up for three runs in the first but gave up just one hit over his final six innings to get the victory.
Monarchs win agai
The Prince William Monarchs improved their record to 5-1 by defeating the Delaware Bison 44-6 Saturday at South Run Park. Quarterback Daryl Overton (Hylton) threw for four touchdowns, ran for a touchdown and a two-point conversion.
Overton completed the evening with six out of 10 attempts for 105 yards and rushed six times for 84 yards.
Shawn Penn caught two touchdown passes, while Chris Barnes and Junior Scott caught the other two.
Free safety Jeff Overton (Hylton) picked off a pass by the Bison's quarterback and ran it back for a 60-yard touchdown.
Free safety Gregory Washington finished with five tackles. Defensive end Ryan Griffin, Jared Henley, Shea Mills and Russell Williams combined for five sacks.
Wright named an all-star
Justin Wright (Forest Park) has been named to the West Team for the Cal Ripken Sr. Collegiate Baseball League All-Star Game.
Wright, a starting pitcher for the Bethesda Big Train, is 3-1 with a 2.45 ERA in seven games.
The left-hander, who will be a sophomore at Virginia Tech, will compete Tuesday in the all-star game at Shirley Povich Field in Bethesda. The game begins at 7:30 p.m.
