“It’s incredible; a huge honor,” said Bartlett. “It’s very surprising because my first three years here I was mostly a defensive player, so the recognition is amazing.”
Bartlett received both honors after a dominating performance against Boston University Mar. 15. The senior midfielder scored five goals and added an assist in the Patriots 19-15 win. It was the second win of the season over a Top 20 team.
Bartlett came into her senior season with seven career goals, but has easily surpassed that this season with 16 tallies. Even more impressive, Bartlett has scored the 16 goals in just seven games with four of those games being multi-goal games.
“My coaches told me they wanted me to be more aggressive,” said Bartlett. “They asked me to be more of an attacker and I guess [the goal scoring] just happened.”
Despite having just seven career goals in her first three years, Bartlett said there was no transi-tion period after being asked to step up her offensive game.
“It wasn’t really a big deal,” said Bartlett. “I’ve always been a part of the offense, so it wasn’t as much of a transition as it was me just actually scoring.”
Bartlett’s new found goal-scoring prowess was needed for the Patriots to succeed this season as they entered the season with 11 freshmen on the roster.
“Having 11 freshmen, you don’t know what to expect,” said Bartlett. “But we’ve gone into every game with a positive outlook and I couldn’t have done what I’ve done without my teammates.”
George Mason defeated Saint Joseph’s on Saturday afternoon 14-6 at George Mason Stadium. Bartlett tallied one goal in the contest, which is the Patriots fifth win in a row to improve their record to 6-1 on the season. The win streak is a new school record, breaking the previous high of four set in 1996.
The 6-1 record is also the best start to a season in the 15-year history of the program. The Patriots outshot Saint Joseph’s 32-20 with an 18-9 advantage in ground balls.
The Patriots will travel to American University on Wednesday for a 4 p.m. matchup with the Ea-gles.
