George Mason second baseman Ryan Soares is making a strong first impression with the Patriots early in the season. The sophomore is leading the team with a .455 batting average and, after a 12 for 16 (.750) week that included three doubles, seven runs and seven RBI, earned Colonial Ath-letic Association co-Player of the Week honors for the week of March 3.
Soares, a transfer from the University of South Florida, had multiple hits in three of Mason’s four games last week as the Patriots went 3-1 on his way to sharing the weekly honor with William & Mary’s Mike Sheridan (.706 with two home runs).
In his first 11 games with Mason, Soares leads the team in hits (20), doubles (five), is second in stolen bases (three in four tries) and third in runs scored at 10. Soares has already agreed to play with the Haymarket Senators of the Valley Baseball League this summer. The Senators play their home games at Battlefield High School in Haymarket with their home opener set for June 1 against the Front Royal Cardinals at 7:30 p.m.
Mason (4-7) hosts Longwood University Thursday before a three-game series against Georgia State Friday through Sunday at the Patriots’ Raymond H. “Hap” Spuhler Field.
