By the time you read this, Baltimore’s Michael Phelps has either captured eight gold medals in swimming, breaking Mark Spitz’ record of seven, or he has finished his run tied with Spitz.
Either way, what Phelps has done is nothing short of amazing.
Saturday morning, his 0.01 victory in the men’s 100-meter butterfly may have been exactly what he needed — a little luck.
When a team is on a roll, a little luck never hurts and the same goes for individuals who are competing.
Phelps is not the only American on a roll in Beijing.
The women’s beach volleyball team of Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh seem to be well on their way to gold as they have reach the field of eight.
U.S. gymnast Nastia Liukin captured gold in the women’s gymnastics all-around finals.
And what can be said about the performance — so far — by the men’s basketball team.
Saturday night they blasted Spain by 37.
Greece tried it, and so did Spain, and it didn’t work.
What was it that didn’t work? The press.
Don’t press the U.S. team if you want to try and stay close. It just doesn’t work.
The U.S. is just too talented to be bottled up by a press.
So far, it doesn’t seem like a team can stay with them if the U.S. plays the way it is supposed to.
THE PRESEASON Associated Press football poll came out Saturday and the Southeastern Conference’s Georgia Bulldogs sit atop the poll at No. 1.
The Bulldogs are one of six SEC team ranked. Florida is ranked No. 5, LSU No. 7, Auburn No. 10, Tennessee No. 18, and Alabama No. 24.
The Crimson Tide opens its season against No. 9 Clemson, which is the top-ranked ACC team in the pre-season poll.
There are a total fo three ACC teams ranked.
Along with Clemson, Virginia Tech is No. 17 and Wake Forest is No. 23.
Notre Dame is not ranked, along with Florida State, Michigan, UCLA, Nebraska, or Virginia.
Penn State is ranked No. 22.
After Georgia, the remaining top five go like this; Ohio State, followed by Southern Cal, Oklahoma and Flor-ida.
AND FINALLY, have you held your NFL Fantasy Draft yet? Well, help is on its way. Wednesday, we will take a look at the top three players at each position, along with the next best, the sleepers and the ones to stay away from.
Just don’t bet the house on our picks.
