The week began with a double header against the Mountaineers on Wednesday. George Mason dropped the opener 9-8 in extra innings. Courtney Zingle’s single in the bottom of the eighth inning did in the Patriots. Mason, however, rebounded in game two, knocking off the Mountaineers 4-0 on a one hit, four-strikeout com-plete game from sophomore Becky Anderson.
The Patriots were led by another sophomore against Mount St. Mary’s. Ciera Jones, a Vienna, Virginia na-tive, went 5 for 5 with five RBI in game one of the doubleheader. Jones got the scoring started with a two-run home run in the top of the 1st inning. Jones also connected on a two-run double in the top of the seventh to tie the game.
George Mason was not as potent offensively in game two; just potent at the right time.
Anderson doubled in the top of the fifth to score Kara Weiner, and then scored herself on a sacrifice fly by junior Alison Bryan. The Patriots scored twice more in the top of the sixth to finish the scoring.
In game one against Wilmington on Saturday, the Patriots continued their shutout streak with a 4-0 victory. Anderson pitched a second consecutive complete game shutout, this time allowing three hits while striking out five.
Ciera Jones again factored heavily going 1 for 3 with two RBI. Jones drew a bases-loaded walk in the top of the third inning to break the scoreless tie. Jones then doubled in the top of the seventh to build the lead to 4-0.
Game two of the doubleheader was not as kind to the Patriots as Game one. George Mason fell behind 2-0 in the second inning and trailed 3-0 heading into the sixth.
A two-run homerun by Ashli Breau in the top of the 6th pulled the Patriots to within 3-2. The Patriots put two runners on base in the top of the seventh but were unable to bring them home.
Despite the loss, Breau’s home run was quite significant as it moved her into first place on Mason’s single-season home run list. Breau’s eighth home run of the season moved her ahead of former Patriot Linda Young, who hit seven home runs during the 2002 season.
The Patriots picked up their third win of the trip with a 5-4 win over the Seahawks on Sunday. Anderson threw her third complete game of the trip, allowing four runs on six hits with four strikeouts.
