It doesn’t happen very often.  In fact it has never happened in Prince William County or possibly in the entire DC metro area.  Nation’s Capital Area Hall of Famer Mark Glover, bowling in the Automotive League on Thursday night at Bowl America Woodbridge, bowled two consecutive sanctioned 300 games.
Mark is no stranger to 300 games having bowled 32 of them prior to Thursday night.  Now he has two more.  It all started out as a typical league night when Mark shot a 225 his first game (this score is consistent with Mark’s composite average across the five leagues he bowls in every week).  What no one knew then was that Mark was just warming up.
He started the next game with six strikes then added six more for a perfect score of 300.  But this was only the beginning.  He continued his striking barrage in the third game by rolling nine straight strikes before getting to the tenth frame.  As the crowd formed behind his lanes, Mark calmly added strikes 10, 11 and 12 for his second 300 in a row for a whopping 825 series.
When asked what he was thinking when he walked up to the approach in the 10th frame Mark said he realized that the chance to bowl two consecutive 300 games may not happen again in his bowling career and that he simply needed to do what he had been doing all night and come out of the ball the same way as in the previous 21 frames.  He added that he was aware that bowling a perfect game requires an element of luck.  “All bowlers know that even a ball rolled solidly in the pocket does not guarantee a strike”.
Mark is one of the top ranked bowlers in the Washington DC area.  For 4 out of the last 6 years he has been ranked number one by the Nation’s Capital Area USBC Association (NCAUSBCA).  He also won that honor four other times in the 1980s.  Unfortunately, the NCAUSBCA did not rank bowlers in the 1990s, a time period when Mark continued to bowl at the highest level.
Mark bowls in local tournaments, PBA Regional and PBA Senior Tour events.  In July 2007 he finished second to Tom Baker in the PBA Senior Northern California Classic in Brentwood California 245-221. In that tournament Mark was looking for his first PBA Senior Tour title. He started with three strikes, but after he nine-spared in the fourth frame, Baker struck six times in a row to take the lead. The match all but ended when Mark left the 4-6-7-10 split in the eighth frame, giving Baker his sixth title in under three seasons. That year Baker was named PBA Senior Player of the Year.
