Blair Smith has stepped down as Freedom High School’s girls basketball coach to become an assistant girls basketball coach at South County. Smith will join the staff of Chrissy Kelly, the former Forest Park head girls basketball coach, who has been hired to take over at South County. In two seasons at Freedom, Smith compiled an 8-37 overall record. This past season, the Eagles went 4-19 and 1-9 in the Cardinal District.
In other news involving Freedom basketball, Sadonas Davis has signed with Division II Augusta State. The 6-foot-6 senior forward averaged a team-high 14.6 points per game for the Cardinal District Tournament champions. He was also all-district.
This season, Augusta State (27-7) reached the Division II National Championship game with the help of two local players, senior Demetrius Howard (Gar-Field) and freshman Caleb Brown (Forest Park).
Glory holding open softball tryout
The Washington Glory is holding an open tryout for aspiring professional softball players on Saturday, May 17 at Westfield High School.
Participants must be at least 21 and have used all of their NCAA eligibility. Elite softball skills are necessary to compete at the pro level.
Registration forms must be received by May 16 and medical waivers must be competed and signed.

Football title games set for Va. Tech
The Virginia High School League announced Thursday that it will hold the 2008 Group AAA Division 5 and 6 state football championships at Virginia Tech’s Lane/Worsham Field. The two games will be held Saturday, December 6, with the Division 5 game starting at noon and the Division 6 game starting at 4:30 p.m.
The two games were held at the University of Virginia last year, but the rising costs forced the VHSL to look elsewhere for a host site.
The VHSL also announced Thursday that the first practice date for high school football teams has been moved from August 1 to July 28th.
Taking scholar-athlete nominations
The Potomac News & Manassas Journal Messenger is currently accepting nominations for the paperís male and female scholar-athletes of the year for senior high school student-athletes who attend Prince William, Manassas Park and Manassas City high schools.
The nominations should include the following information: cumulative grade point average, class rank, college, high school athletic honors and high school academic honors. Nominations can be either e-mailed to or mailed to David Fawcett, Potomac News, P.O. Box 2470, Woodbridge, Va., 22192. Please include a contact number as well. The deadline for nominations is Friday, May 23rd.
