TRIO EARN 2007 USBC
RECOGNITION AWARDS
Youth bowling pioneer Don Lowry, state and local association official Charlotte Smith and bowling center owner Roger Wiemer have been chosen to receive United States Bowling Congress recognition awards for 2007.
• The late Don Lowry of Kokmo, Ind., was selected for the Joyce Deitch Trailblazer Award. A long-time bowling proprietor, Lowry, who died in 1998, was known as the Father of Youth Bowling. The longtime Bowling Proprietors’ Association of America member and one-time BPAA vice president was a major voice in ending an 18-year dispute that resulted in the merger of BPAA’s Youth Bowling Association and the American Junior Bowling Congress. He served as the first president of the Young American Bowling Alliance in the 1982-83 season. He also founded the Bowling Proprietors’ Association of America National Family Tournament. Lowry was a member of the BPAA Board of Directors and also served on the BPAA Youth Committee for about 20 years. He was instrumental in the career of USBC Hall of Famer Don Johnson. He earned BPAA’s second-highest honor, the President’s Award, in 1982. Later, Lowry earned BPAA’s highest honor, the Victor Lerner Memorial Awared, in 1983. In 1982, Lowry was elected to the Indiana Bowling Association Hall of Fame. He was a charter member of the Kokomo Bowling Association Hall of Fame.
• Charlotte Smith, who currently serves as Washington USBC Association vice president and Coeur d’Alene USBC Women’s Bowling Association president, earned the Helen Baker Outstanding Association Service Award. She was instrumental in helping Washington merge its American Bowling Congress, Women’s International Bowling Congress and Young American Bowling Alliance Associations into the USBC. Smith has been involved in bowling since 1968 when she was drafted as secretary of her husband’s military league in Germany. She continued her involvement back in the U.S. in Colorado, Wyoming, South Dakota, Idaho and Washington. During her terms on various local and state boards of directors, she has helped develop policy and procedure manuals, established life membership, member emeritae, hall of fame and association awards and later became a certified coach. She received the Betty Mellen Award from the St. Maries (Idaho) Women’s Bowling Association for exemplifying the best image of bowling. She was later inducted into the St. Maries WBA and Coeur d’Alene WBA Halls of Fame.
• Roger Wiemer, who currently owns three Springfield Missouri centers and who has overseen seven establishments dating back to 1971, has been a staunch supporter of certified league and tournament bowling, was selected to receive the Proprietor of the Year Award. A bowler for more than 60 years and a former Professional Bowlers Association Senior Tour player, he is scheduled to compete in his 49th USBC Open Championships in Albuquerque, N.M. in March. Wiemer also has been very active in the BPAA. He served as local and state president and recently finished a two-year term on the BPAA Board of Directors as Midwest regional director. Each year, he takes a week off and works at the Qubica/AMF International Family Tournament. Wiemer also has hosted one of the country’s most successful tournaments, the Great Ozarks Open, since 1990. The 50th anniversary event, which runs from early February through mid-June, is expected to have more than 1,900 teams. Innovations such as creating scratch travel leagues and a senior travel league have helped keep bowling strong in his centers. Wiemer is a member of three bowling association Halls of Fame - Missouri, Springfield and Burlington, Iowa.
ASBATY, PAGE NAMED 2007
AMATEURS OF THE YEAR
Team USA members Diandra Asbaty and Rhino Page have been selected as the 2007 Amateur Bowlers of the Year by the Bowling Writers Association of America.
• Asbaty, a Dyer, Ind., native residing in Chicago, Ill., started her 2007 in January with a fourth-place finish in the United States Bowling Congress Team USA Trials in Reno, Nev. She earned her first major 2007 victory in May with the World Ranking Masters women’s title in Lake Wales, Fla. That came just five days after finishing second in the USBC Queens in Charlotte, N.C. In July, Asbaty collected the women’s doubles gold medal at the Pan American Games in Brazil. Then in late August and early September, she earned a gold medal in Masters and silver in the team event in the World Tenpin Bowling Association Women’s World Championships in Monterrey, Mexico. She capped the year in December by winning the final event in the Professional Bowlers Association Women’s Series in Wyoming, Mich.
• Page, a San Diego native living in Topeka, Kan., began his year well with a runner-up finish at the USBC Team USA Trials. He earned gold medals in singles and doubles at the Pan American Games and gold medals in team and Masters and bronze in all-events at the WTBA Men’s American Zone Championships in late June and early July. For his efforts, Page was named United States Olympic Committee Athlete of the Year for Bowling and Bowlers Journal International Amateur of the Year.
