Even after taking a three-day hiatus for the All-Star break, the Potomac Nationals cannot stop winning.
Potomac beat the Myrtle Beach Pelicans 5-2 on Thursday in the first game of a three-game series.
Another outstanding starting pitching performance coupled with an ability to rally late gives the Nationals (6-1 second half, 48-29 overall) in the same venue which outfielder Edgardo Baez hit the game-winning home run in Tuesday’s California League-Carolina League All-Star game.
Down 1-0, Potomac scored three seventh innings runs. It scored once more in the eighth and once in the ninth.
The Nationals’ first run came when Michael Martinez scored when Baez reached base on a throwing error by Pelicans first baseman Ernesto Mejia.
With the bases loaded, Matt Rogelstad scored when Dee Brown was hit by a pitch.
Baez scored on a wild pitch by Chris Vines.
A single by Leonard Davis in the eighth allowed Martinez to score.
Marvin Lowrance scored Potomac’s final run on a double by Francisco Plasencia.
Nationals relief pitcher Josh Wilkie pitched the ninth and faced just four batters. He picked up the save after allowing one hit.
But starting pitcher Justin Jones gave the Nationals the best chance to win. Jones pitched six innings and allowed a run on five hits. He walked three and struck out three.
His performance earned him his second win versus one loss and lowered his ERA to 1.45.
Martinez and Rogelstad had two hits for Potomac and Lowrance recorded a stolen base.
