Willard Lawrence rolled to his 10th win of the year in a 75-lap Late Model feature at Old Dominion Satur-day. The Haymarket driver started sixth, got around Mike Arnold for the lead in lap 33, then cruised to the checkers.
“The car flies through the corners,” said Lawrence, who picked up his 15th top two of the season. “She started getting a little free at the end, but on bald tires, she’s still real fast.”
Arnold started on the pole in the 18-car field and finished second, his seventh top five of the year.
“I’ll take what I can get,” Arnold said. “The car picked up a little push after a while.”
Les Miranda notched his 11th top five of 2008 with a third. Miranda started fourth and took third when Adam Brenner and Robert Bruce got together in lap 72. Bruce finished sixth and Brenner seventh.
Dave Carter, who was running seventh when Bruce and Brenner crashed, took over fourth and held the spot. It was his first top five of the year.
Mike Southard, who started fifth, came in fifth. Southard was running second much of the race and spun on lap 70 and dropped to sixth before moving forward.
In Legends, Roger Austin, Jr. powered his way to his fifth win of the year. Austin started fifth and grabbed the lead from George Cushman in the second lap and held off David Polenz in the final laps for the win. With his second place finish, Polenz collected his 12th top five of the season.
“I knew if I got out front and could save my tires that Polenz couldn’t,” Austin said. “The last two or three races have been real good.”
Polenz said it was difficult getting through the field. He got around Cushman in lap eight for second.
“I felt a whole lot faster than Roger but I couldn’t get around him,” Polenz said.
In Mini Stocks, Davey Callihan racked up his fifth and sixth wins of the year in twin 15-lappers. In the first race, Callihan and Bobby Able generated plenty of excitement as they battled door-to-door for the lead for six laps before Callihan pulled ahead in lap 11.
Able was second, Mike Carte third, Scotty Gore fourth and Nick Johnston fifth.
“That was a great race,” Callihan said. “I had fun.”
“He’s got a great car and he drove a great race,” Able said.
In the second Mini Stock race, Callihan started sixth and got around Johnston for the lead in lap 10. Earlier, Gore, Able and Callihan all had to pit after getting together. Gore was second, Johnston third, and Riley fourth.
In U-Cars, Bryan Fox took home his seventh win of the year. Fox started 13th in the field after winning the week before. He picked his way through the field and threaded his way around a lap car and Billy Ingle for the lead in lap 17.
“I figured it would work splitting them,” Fox said.
Ingle snagged his 14th top five with a second. “Bryan’s really good and he’s a little faster than I am now,” Ingle said.
Jeff Beamer was third, Greg Sites fourth and Craig Olgevee fifth.
