Books donated to new school on International Literacy Day

Jane Conner signs a book she plans to donate at Shirley C. Heim Middle School on Monday, as Principal Mary Grace McGraw stands by her side. Conner's husband Al Conner was also at the book-donation event, along with retired educator Shirley Heim, whom the school is named for, and Librarian Jenny Ashby.

The Literacy Council of Northern Virginia is gearing up for its fall English classes for adults.

Classes are available across the region. Approximately 90 percent of those in the program are foreign-born, with many living below the federal poverty line.

Registration is required prior to starting classes. During registration, students pay a $75 coursework fee and take an oral placement exam.

For information and a schedule of classes, call (703) 237-0866 or see the Web site at www.lcnv.org.
