Calling all women veterans.

"Support our Veteran Sisters" and the American Legion family will be hosting a free women veterans health fair March 2 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at American Legion Post 10 in Manassas.

Dianne Cabot, former state president of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, said a lot of women stepped up to serve the nation in the last decade in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Now those wars are winding down and women veterans are returning home it “became really apparent within the veterans organizations, the veterans world, that the Department of Veterans Affairs weren’t quite ready for those large numbers as Jane came marching home," she said.

"They are making great strides forward in their services and facilities, which is very encouraging, but the problems in filing a claim are staggering.”

With a claims backlog plaguing the VA, many female vets have found it difficult to receive the benefits they are entitled to as a result of their service, she said.

“They love this country,” Cabot said. “It breaks my heart. They deserve everything their male counterparts get.”

The health fair aims to help women veterans break through the claims logjam.

American Legion certified service officers will be on hand to answer questions and assist them with filing claims.

“These officers are trained by the VA to help file claims on behalf of veterans,” explained Cabot.

Women veteran attendees can help in the claim process by bringing documentation such as DD-214s that shows their service.

Representatives from the Greater Prince William Community Health Center, will provide free health screenings at the event.

Also on hand will be representatives from the Prince William Area Agency on Aging, the VA Caregiver Support Program, Habitat for Humanity, Project Mend-A-House, Final Salute, and other veteran oriented charities and agencies.

The event is open to all women veterans, whether they are currently on active duty or have served honorably during any of the nation’s wars.
American Legion Post 10 is located at 9950 Cockrell Road in Manassas.
