Arlington government officials say they can’t remember that last time the County Board called off its monthly Saturday meeting due to inclement weather.
But the snows of Jan. 22-23 made the decision almost inevitable; the Jan. 23 meeting, like nearly every other planned event regionwide over the weekend, was scratched.
“Safety is our first concern,” said County Board Chairman Libby Garvey, who made the call to postpone the meeting. “We are asking everyone to stay off the roads this weekend – it would be irresponsible to ask staff, applicants and the public to come out to a board meeting.”
The five County Board members will squeeze all their work into the scheduled recessed meeting of Jan. 26.
Postponing the meeting had been expected as predictions of massive snow and high winds came in the week prior to the storm’s arrival. Garvey said she waited until Friday to make a final determination in order to make sure the forecast was a reasonably sure bet.
