County Manager Mark Schwartz

Arlington County Manager Mark Schwartz speaks to County Board members.

Call him a cockeyed optimist if you will, but Arlington County Manager Mark Schwartz has not given up on his goal of finding sponsors to help offset the cost of the Long Bridge Park aquatics center.

“I remain optimistic that we will be successful” in finding partners,” Schwartz told County Board members Jan. 29, though he offered no specifics.

Finding well-heeled corporate sponsors for the building as a whole – “Amazon Aquatics Center,” “Boeing Bathing Basilica” or “Nestlé Natatorium,” anyone? – or parts of it to help offset the $70 million price tag of the project long has been a goal of Schwartz, but thus far the effort has come up empty.

You're referring to the Longbridge Regional Aquatics Center, right? Primary beneficiaries will be DC residents and office workers whose offices are nearby but don't live in Arlington.
