In commemoration of Fire Prevention Week (Oct. 6-12), all Arlington fire stations will host an open house on Oct. 12 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Local residents can stop by their local station that day to meet firefighters, see the fire trucks, join in the activities and learn about fire safety.

This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme is “Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape!”

I have spoken to Arlington's firefighters and EMS techs about Arlington's Fire Department. Arlington's firefighters and EMS techs are overwhelmed by calls for service to the extent that they leave the County for other fire departments with better working conditions.

It gets worse because Arlington County will permanently close Fire Station 7 on Arlington's border with Alexandria, although in-fill redevelopment is occurring and will occur nearby in both the City and County. County Government won't even consider stationing an ambulance in Fire Station 7. Nor has the County approached Alexandria about a new joint fire / EMS station on the Arlington-Alexandria border, although the County Board and City Council held a joint meeting on October 1st to explore mutually beneficial public infrastructure options in the future.
