Arlington ranked behind only Madison, Wisc., in the ranking for communities with populations between 100,000 and 500,000. The survey, updated for the first time since 2015, used more than 50 data sources to score communities on areas ranging from housing and transportation to social engagement.
Also near the top among mid-sized communities: St. Paul, Minn.; Boulder, Colo.; and Minneapolis. Highest among large communities were San Francisco and Boston; highest among smaller communities were two Wisconsin cities, Sheboygan and La Crosse.
