Del. Mark Levine (D-45th)

It was the 995th bill dropped in the House of Delegates’ hopper for 2016, but probably will always hold special meaning to Del. Mark Levine (D-45th) – it was his first piece of legislation.

The measure, which was posted Jan. 13, would enable Virginia localities to impose their own minimum wage, higher than the $7.25 federal and state level, if local governments vote to do so. The bill would set a maximum minimum wage of $10 for 2016, with that ceiling changing each year depending on the federal Consumer Price Index.

Chances of success seem slim; previous efforts to do the same thing have gone nowhere in the House of Delegates.

Levine won the Democratic primary last June and was unopposed in the November general election to succeed Del. Rob Krupicka, who opted not to seek re-election. While centered in Alexandria, the 45th District includes a number of precincts in South Arlington.
