Lyft to supplant taxis in providing ‘SoberRide’ trips

Washington Regional Alcohol Program leaders announced in March 2017 that ride-sharing company Lyft would begin providing free rides under the “SoberRide” program, starting March 17 with the St. Patrick's Day holiday.

The annual holiday SoberRide initiative of the Washington Regional Alcohol Program (WRAP) will run from Dec. 14 through Jan. 1 from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. each night.

Adults who may have had too much to drink during the period can receive a free ride home (up to a $15 value) from Lyft during the period.

“Last year, nearly 2,000 Washington residents did the right thing and availed themselves of this life-saving service rather than possibly driving home impaired,” said Kurt Gregory Erickson, WRAP’s president.

In addition to the December holiday period, the SoberRide initiative also is in place during St. Patrick’s Day, Cinco de Mayo, Independence Day and Halloween. Since 1991, it has provided more than 73,000 free rides home to would-be drunk drivers.
