MAC Zone

Get ready for some more Maple Avenue Commercial (MAC) rezoning action in the town of Vienna.

The Vienna Town Council on April 29 voted 5-2 set a June 3 public hearing to discuss town’s fifth MAC application, a proposal by Sunrise Development Inc. to build a senior-living center with ground-floor retail space at 100-112 Maple Ave., E.

The application currently is before the Vienna Planning Commission, which will continue its April 24 public hearing to May 8. Because the proposal will need a conditional-use permit, it then will go to the Vienna Board of Zoning Appeals, and come back to the Planning Commission on May 22 if necessary, before going on to the Town Council for a final decision, said Vienna Planning and Zoning Director Cindy Petkac.

Council members Howard Springsteen and Pasha Majdi voted against the June 3 Council public hearing. Springsteen objected to the town’s decision timetable.

“I feel our back is against the wall on this Sunrise application,” he said. “I would prefer not to have a public hearing until we have some of the issues ironed out.”
