The Board of Supervisors unanimously agreed to allow Don Beyer Volvo to continue using inventory parking lots in the Falls Church area, which had been in existence for about four decades, but never authorized formally by the county.

The auto dealership, owned by the family of U.S. Rep. Donald Beyer (D-8th), has a showroom in the city of Falls Church, but uses properties at 7113 and 7117 Shreve Road  and 118 Gordons Road in Providence District for vehicle storage.

The supervisors’ rezoning action legitimizes an existing use, said Andrew Painter, the applicant’s attorney.

The site will be used for vehicle storage round-the-clock, seven days per week. Vehicles stored there will be operable and the dealership’s clients may visit the lot, county officials said. The county’s rezoning will result in some minor land disturbance, but no new construction or additional employees at the site.

As a further inducement, the dealership has agreed to install a section of Level 1 permeable paving to help alleviate stormwater issues at the site.

“I would like to thank the applicant for going the extra yard there on the stormwater management,” said Supervisor Linda Smyth (D-Providence). “This is an area that has a lot of stormwater problems.”
