Sonic Conversion Example

An example of a Sonic "conversion" franchise. Developers of Northern Virginia's first Sonic location in Manassas will be converting a former Burger King near Balls Ford Road.

Plans for what will be Northern Virginia’s only Sonic Drive-In will go before the Prince William Board of County Supervisors next month.

The board will hear a request for a special use permit on Tuesday, May 14, said Curtis Rowlette, planner with the county’s planning office.

The national drive-thru franchise is planning to redevelop a closed Burger King restaurant on 1.3 acres at 10850 Promenade Lane, near Bob Evans and Arby’s.

Developers are planning a more traditional restaurant than fans of the popular drive-in chain might be expecting. Most of the seating will be inside — more than 90 seats — with just a handful of drive-in bays in the parking lot.

The county’s planning commission unanimously approved the special use permit on March 20.

The closest Sonic location is off U.S. 17 near Fredericksburg.
