Community Foundation awards $259,260 to Northern Virginia programs

The Community Foundation for Northern Virginia awarded the 2018 Community Investment Grants to 26 area groups, according to a news release. The total sum of grants made is $259,260.

These grants will further the organizations’ abilities to improve the health, education and general wellbeing of the region. 

A total of 123 applications for grants were submitted to the foundation.   

“The Community Investment grants are important for the continuance of many critical programs in this region,” said Community Foundation Board Member, Ken Huntsman, 2018 Community Investment Fund Grants Committee Chair. “This year’s grantees are serving the neediest in our community, and we are committed to continue to invest in the mission of these organizations.”

The grants were presented to the following organizations. 

Child and Youth Development Grants totaling $82,000 went to:

  • Community Preservation and Development Corporation, $6,200. Funding will support after school/summer activities in Fairfax County
  • Girls on The Run of Nova, $8,500. Funding will support after school/summer activities in Prince William County
  • H.A.C.A.N. Hispanics Against Child Abuse and Neglect, $10,000. Funding will support after school/summer activities in Fairfax County
  • Healing Hearts Mobile Art*, $10,000. Funding will support after school/summer activities in Prince William County.
  • INMED Partnerships for Children, $10,000. Funding will support after school/summer activities in Loudoun County
  • Windy Hill Foundation, $10,000. Funding will support after school/summer activities in Loudoun County.
  • SCAN of Northern Virginia, $7,300. Funding will support after school/summer activities in Northern Virginia.
  • National Inventors Hall of Fame*, $10,000. Funding will support after school/summer activities in Prince William County.
  • The House, Inc.*, $10,000. Funding will support after school/summer activities in Prince William County.

Education grants totaling $45,000  

  • Edu-Futuro (Education Para Nuestro Futuro), $10,000. Funding will provide support for workforce development/skills-based education in Northern Virginia.
  • La Cocina VA, $10,000. Funding will support workforce development/skills-based education in Northern Virginia.
  • The Arc of Northern Virginia, $7,500. Funding will provide support for workforce development/skills-based education in Northern Virginia.
  • The Child and Family Network Centers, $10,000. Funding will support early childhood education in Alexandria.
  • Together We Bake, $7,500. Funding will provide support for workforce development/skills-based education in Northern Virginia.
  • Health, mental health, and aging grants totaling $45,800
  • Project Mend-A-House*, $10,000. Funding will support aging services in Prince William County.
  • PRS, Inc., $17,900. Funding will support aging in place in Fairfax County.
  • Rebuilding Together Arlington/Fairfax/Falls Church, Inc., $17,900. Funding will support aging in place in Fairfax County.

Poverty relief grants totaling $80,000

  • Alternative House, $10,000. Funding will support housing/shelter in Fairfax County.
  • Amara Legal Center, $10,000. Funding will support other emergency assistance, not food related in Northern Virginia.
  • Britepaths, $10,000. Funding will support other emergency assistance, not food related, in Fairfax County.
  • Fairfax Law Foundation, $10,000. Funding will support housing/shelter in Fairfax County.
  • Friends of Guest House, Inc., $10,000. Funding will support housing/shelter in Northern Virginia.
  • Friends of Loudoun Mental Health, $10,000. Funding will support housing/shelter in Loudoun County.
  • Lorton Community Action Center, $10,000. Funding will support eviction/foreclosure assistance in Fairfax County.
  • Transitional Housing BARN*, $10,000. Funding will support housing/shelter in Prince William County.
