An 82-year-old Falls Church man was struck and killed by a tractor-trailer while trying to cross Interstate 495 early Saturday, according to the Virginia State Police.

Around 12:33 a.m., a 2014 Honda Accord sedan traveling north on I-495 near Route 7 in Fairfax County ran off the right side of the interstate and struck a concrete barrier and then the guard rail.

The driver, 82-year-old Barrington Holt, exited his vehicle and was attempting to cross the northbound lanes of I-495 when he crossed in front of a northbound tractor-trailer, police spokesperson Corinne Geller said. He was struck and died at the scene.

The tractor-trailer tried to avoid the man by braking suddenly and was rear-ended by another tractor-trailer.

Both tractor-trailer drivers were wearing seat belts. Neither one was injured in the crash.
