Prince William police lights generic

Prince William County police are sharing tips to help residents protect their vehicles after an increase in auto thefts in Lake Ridge, Dale City, Woodbridge and Dumfries.

Some of the vehicles stolen recently were left unlocked with the keys inside or the vehicle was left running and unattended.

Residents are encouraged to be on the lookout during the day and evening, and to call 911 if they see any suspicious activity.

Car owners are reminded to:

  • Always lock your vehicle, event if left unattended for a few minutes.

  • Do not leave keys in the vehicle.

  • Do not leave the car running to warm it up or for any other reason.

  • Park in well-lit areas at night.

  • Park in the driveway rather on the street.

  • Consider a car alarm for added protection.
