Prince William police are asking for the public's help locating the driver in a fatal wreck Tuesday night that involved a pedestrian reportedly lying in the roadway.

Alvin Smith, 40, of Dumfries, was transported to a local hospital where he died, said police spokesperson Sgt. Jonathan Perok.

A county park ranger reportedly spotted Smith lying in the northbound lands of Fraley Boulevard (U.S. 1) near Graham Park Road in Dumfries around 7:34 p.m.

He pulled off on the side of the road to check on the man's welfare when a white driver in a blue vehicle struck Smith, Perok said. The driver stopped initially before proceeding northbound.

"Investigators are working to determine why the pedestrian was lying the roadway prior to the collision and to identify the driver of the striking vehicle," Perok said, noting that alcohol appears to be a factor.

Anyone who may have witnessed this incident is asked to contact Prince William County Police at 703-792-6500.
