A body discovered on the side of the road in Stafford County over the weekend has been identified as a 16-year-old Fairfax resident.
Law enforcement is not releasing his name at this point in the investigation, according to the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office.
Detectives believe that the boy was killed in Prince George’s County, Maryland, and his body was taken to the area of River Road where it was discovered early on Saturday, March 9, said SCSO spokesperson Amanda Vicinanzo.
A deputy was on patrol around 4:50 a.m. when he saw an unknown object between the road and the Rappahannock River. As he got out of his vehicle and approached, he recognized it as a male body with signs of trauma.
Detectives initially had trouble identifying the victim and released a photo of a distinctive bloody tattoo in hopes someone would recognize the image.
Stafford detectives are working with state and federal law enforcement, along with detectives in Prince George’s County, Spotsylvania and Fairfax, Vicinanzo said.
The homicide remains under active investigation.
