Jacob Butterfield was last seen Jan. 25. Fredericksburg police photo

Two fishermen late Thursday discovered the body of a missing Fredericksburg man in the Rappahannock River near the Little Falls boat ramp.

The fishermen saw what they thought was a body floating in the river and called law enforcement at 10:58 p.m., the Stafford County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.

Members of the Sheriff’s Office and Stafford County Fire and Rescue located the body and removed it from the river. The remains were later identified as Jacob David Butterfield, 23, who was last seen in hanging out with friends in downtown Fredericksburg on Jan. 25.

The cause of death has not yet been determined and the investigation continues.
