Arlington students raises funds for island impacted by Hurricane Irma

Krista Gehring (bottom right) is shown presenting a contribution during a recent visit to Sint Maarten.

An effort by Ashlawn Elementary School fifth-grader Krista Gehring is helping support several charitable organizations on the Caribbean island of Saint Martin.

Gehring did research to find organizations that were supporting charitable endeavors in the wake of Hurricane Irma, and fund-raised at the local level to support the organizations in Sint Maarten, the Dutch side of the island.

About $800 was raised for organizations that included Player Development, supporting food distribution and other service projects; the I Can Foundation, which supports foster-care initiatives; and Safe Haven, a non-profit that offers shelter, counseling and supportive services to victims of domestic violence.

Gehring is headed to Kenmore Middle School next year.
